This was definitely a game of two halves as the blustery wind blowing down the pitch was the winner ...

over football as the players found it very difficult to get any consistent play going.

Playing against the wind in the first half Rangers found themselves trailing to the Division’s basement side on 8 mins, a long ball over the visitor’s back line saw Whitworth’s Ben Mason chase and as Deeping custodian Lewis Elsom went to close down him down a slip on the edge of the box allowed the forward the time to lob the ball over him into the empty net.

Sloppy Rangers play in midfield enabled another ball over the Clarets back line for Mason to pursue, Elsom made the challenge and stopped his progress but caught the forward a picked up a yellow card for his trouble.

Deeping tried to get the ball moving, Scott Mooney’s fine pass gave Tyler Walker good space wide, his low cross into the box had home defender Tom North stretching to clear.

Walker miscontrolled an Elsom goal kick, Nicky Charlton seized the opportunity to progress into the box where the Clarets keeper was out smartly to make a good save.

A Dan Schiavi free kick curled to the goal where David Burton-Jones arrived with his touch being wide, a quick throw from Mooney saw Dan Jarvis back heel into the goal area where Abduramane Sani’s back flick was just the wrong side of the post for the visitors.

The home side were reduced to 10 men in additional time as North was dismissed for violent conduct

Half Time – Wellingborough Whitworth 1 Deeping Rangers 0

With the wind behind them Rangers were quickly on the offensive as the second period proceeded, Schiavi’s low free kick into the box was collected by Burton-Jones who turned to blast home from 12 yards to level the scores on 48 mins.

Deeping were close again as Schiavi fed Cameron Johnson, his shot from the corner of the box floated over, Schiavi saw his corner curl towards goal but was narrowly high.

The Clarets took the lead on 56 mins, Schiavi’s free kick curled to the far post where Burton-Jones arrived to nod home.

It was all Deeping, Johnson collected on the edge of the box, a touch for space and his rocket shot smashed against the bar.

Burton-Jones was close to his hat trick as he met Schiavi’s cross but the header was inches wide.

Rangers scored a third on 66 mins, Schiavi’s short corner to Johnson was retuned where he drove low to see Mooney apply a deft touch steered the ball into the corner of the net.

Deeping’s dominance saw Schiavi crash a shot against the bar, he then delivered a corner to the far post where Burton-Jones‘ touch was, again, just wide of the goal.

On the final whistle the Clarets were pleased to hear that Rugby had lost so they regain 2nd spot in the table.
