The visitors started well, Jack Friend fired a long range effort that brought a fine low full length save from Richard Stainsby but it was the home side who made the breakthrough on 14 mins, a ball into the heart of St Mary’s defence was touched on by Scott Coupland, Dan Schiavi took a touch and then slid the ball past Dan Smith into the far corner.

Deeping’s Henry Dunn played a ball over the visitors back line, Scott Mooney’s touch was blocked by Jordan Goult and cleared, Mooney turned creator when he cut back a pass to allow David Burton-Jones to blast goalwards to strike a couple of visiting defenders and away.

Mooney picked up the ball in centre circle, wriggled his way to a shooting position with his long range effort missing the post by inches.

Rangers doubled their advantage on 30 mins with a Schiavi cracker – his 35 yard free kick curling into the top corner past the helpless Smith.

St Mary’s pacy Dan Emmington sped down the left wing and despite the efforts of Jason Kilbride crossed into the home box that Luke Hunnings cut out a full stretch.

The visitors pulled a goal back on 34 mins, Jakub Ziabka’s corner was punched clear by Stainsby where Tom Chilton struck on the half volley through the throng and inside the far post

Deeping saw another chance missed, Schiavi’s dipping free kick was punched away by Smith where Burton-Jones’ attempt was hampered by the attention of Dean Miller and he pulled the effort wide

Half Time – Deeping Rangers 2 Wisbech St Mary 1

Deeping came out looking to finish off Wisbech, Schiavi fed Mooney, he turned in the box and as he attempted to shoot was fouled by Goult, Coupland stepped up to stroke home the penalty on 51 mins.

St Mary’s struck back immediately, Miller’s deep free kick was met at the far post by Emmington and he hit a sweet volley inside the post past the dive of Stainsby for 3-2.

Rangers were claiming another penalty as Schiavi burst into the visitors box where his progress was halted by a couple of challenges – it looked more of a penalty than the one that was given, Dunn’s pass split the Wisbech defence where Charlie Coulson collected only to be thwarted by Smith’s save down at his feet.

A swift break was almost taken by Emmington but the touch ran through to Stainsby, Jack Friend fizzed a free kick just over the bar as the visitors tried to get on level terms.

Deeping pushed on, Mooney combined with Coupland only to see his blast over the bar, he was then set up by Burton-Jones only to miskick and Dunn made a good break into the visitors box where Miller was on hand to make a good tackle and clear.

Wisbech keeper Smith made a good save at the feet of Mooney as he homed in on that elusive goal.

St Mary sub Danny Setchell had the last opportunity, his snapshot clipping a defender and was taken by the retreating Stainsby.

A hard earned victory for the home side to set up a tie with Peterborough Sports (at Yaxley) on May 2nd – 7.45pm Kick Off.
