to lay a wreath and pay respects with the Last Post and a minutes silence being observed.
When the match got going the visitors soon found the home side intent on preserving their unbeaten run as Rangers proceeded to control the game although for an hour they were repelled by some stout resistance from the Doughboys who were well marshalled by skipper Joe Rich and Adam Speight.
Deeping’s Dan Flack sent a ball over the top for Will Bird to get a shot in that was just wide of the far post, Dan Schiavi’s delightful pass split the visitors defence to allow Bird to round keeper Aaron Bellairs only to see hi effort cleared from the line by Speight.
Bird sent Scott Coupland into space, he laid off for Schiavi to shoot weakly at Bellairs.
It was no surprise when Rangers broke the deadlock on 25 mins, Bird attacked down the left, he picked out Schiavi who drove his shot inside the far post past the dive of Bellairs.
Bird was close again when, having been supplied by Charlie Coulson, he evaded the keeper’s challenge but could only hit the side net from an acute angle.
Deeping full back Tom Smith sent a glorious pass to free Schiavi whose effort was cleared off the line by Speight, Coulson’s dazzling footwork got him past the defender with his attempt curling towards the top corner where David Burton-Jones arrived to apply the finishing touch only to divert the ball over the bar.
Another Smith pass freed Bird, he beat the defender to square for Coupland who skewed the shot wide.
A rare visitor’s effort saw Deven Ellwood strike from long range without troubling home custodian Richard Stainsby.
Half Time – Deeping Rangers 1 Wellingborough Town 0
Rangers started the second period as they had played the first, Burton-Jones header sent Coupland free, his shot was blocked by Rich, Flack’s teasing cross allowed Jason Kilbride to head goalwards where Bellairs gathered at the second attempt.
The Doughboys Dan Bendon pounced on a loose ball and curled his shot just over the bar, fellow striker Justin Dowling harried the home defence where Flack just nipped in to clear the danger.
The Clarets Smith fed Schiavi out wide, he cut along the goal line to blast goalwards for Bellairs to push away – from the resulting Schiavi corner Burton-Jones rose highest among the crowd to power his header into the net to double Rangers advantage on 64 mins.
Rangers went further ahead 5 mins later, Schiavi collected the ball in his own half, he evaded 3 or 4 challenges to progress into the Doughboys box where his run was ended by a foul from Lewis Sheridan – Coupland stepped up to blast home the penalty.
Wellingborough sub Jon Mitchell played in Albert Akinremi whose shot was straight at Stainsby.
Flack sent in a beauty of a ball for Coupland to collect and a cross cum shot was just out of Bird’s range for a finish.
Deeping completed the scoring on 75 mins with a sizzling solo effort from Charlie Coulson, with back to goal, dummied and turned into space, past the attendant defenders into the box before blasting past the advancing keeper to the delight of the crowd.
The last chance of the game fell to the visitors as Dowling curled a free kick into the goal where Luke Hunning’s was back to head clear from the goal line.
Rangers notched up another success that their performance deserved – a performance and result that our departed friend Roy would certainly have appreciated.
