Hunnings header gets Rangers point at Swans

Match Scribe

Rangers travelled to Willen Road looking to stop a run of reverses, having lost on their three previous visits, and to maintain an unbeaten run ......

against their hosts who were also on a good undefeated run so it was possibly predictable that a stalemate would result.

Deeping started well, Dan Schiavi’s free kick hit the wall with Schiavi driving the rebound to bring a full stretch save from home keeper Mark McIntyre, Scott Mooney won a challenge with Dave Baker, he squared the ball into the path of Henry Dunn who saw his effort miss the target.

The Swans broke the deadlock on 15 mins, Sam O’Neill twisted and turned to pass into Dom Lawless in the visitor’s box, one touch and then he drove the ball inside the post past the dive of Richard Stainsby.

The game drifted into play between the two boxes as neither side could find the pass to breakthrough their opponents defensive line, the nearest goal threat came from the home side as Daryl Smith’s inswinging free kick was met by O’Neill but the header was wide.

Rangers came out more ‘direct’ for the second half and as a result had a greater share of the chances, sub Jason Kilbride escaped the attention of Scott Mulkern to feed Mooney into the home box only to see the shot too high when a side pass could been more beneficial.

It was no surprise that Deeping levelled on 55 mins, Charlie Coulson’s inswinging free kick saw Luke Hunnings rise above the throng to head back into the far corner.

Rangers were buoyed by this and enjoyed their best spell of the game, Scott Coupland collected on half way, a diagonal ball sent Schiavi attacking down the left, his shot being saved the legs of McIntyre, Coupland seized on a loose ball to curl towards the top corner but McIntyre flying save tipped the ball away.

A long clearance from Rangers’ Tom Smith got Mooney in behind the Swans defence and his shot was pushed away by the advancing McIntyre, another Smith cross into the home box fell for Mooney, the shot was blocked to fall for Coupland, he fed Smith again to centre where Kilbride headed wide.

Deeping’s Dan Flack won and found Coulson, his return pass had Flack free to cross for Coupland who had the ball nicked away from him by the outstretched leg of Baker.

Pagnell had a good chance when a mix up in the visitors defence allowed Lawless to collect, his pass saw Fazel Koriya in the Rangers box where Smith was on hand to clear the danger, another Deeping defence scramble allowed Koriya to get a shot in the Stainsby deflected and Flack had to clear from the goal line.

The Swan’s Olly Wilkinson pounced on a loose ball to strike from 25 yards but it was too high.

Another opportunity for Rangers, the ball was played forward, Mooney touched into the pathe of Coupland, his first touch was to lob keeper McIntyre where Mulkern was there to partially clear but Coupland got in a second effort where Wilkinson cleared from the line, from the corner Jonny Clay’s header rattled the post and out.

It was telling that the home Man of the Match was keeper McIntyre – Rangers could have taken all 3 points but certainly the keeper had a big say in keeping the score level.
