Deeping edge the duel of the Rangers as Ward nets winner

Match Scribe23 Feb 2015 - 21:41

This match of the Rangers was played with both teams missing players - Deeping having three sidelined as a result disciplinary punishments ......

that saw Tuncay Korkmaz shuffle the pack to give a balanced team.

Deeping were first to threaten when Charlie Coulson played in Jezz Goldson-Williams who turned to shoot weakly at visiting keeper Jamie McAlinden

Sileby’s Lance Allen and Stuart McMichael combined to release Will Muzvimbiri out right who saw his cross/shot rebound from the crossbar and cleared to safety.

The home side broke the deadlock on 6 mins – a Mohammed Hamid short corner found Coulson, his dribble into the box was halted by a lunge challenge from Muzvimbiri and skipper Spencer Tinkler stepped forward to strike home the penalty as McAlinden dived the wrongway.

Deeping were appealing for another penalty as Hamid capitalised on a mess up by Silbey’s Ryan Cottingham to advance into the box where Cottingham appeared to trip him but the referee was unimpressed.

The Clarets were having a spell of dominance and Jordan Avis’ through ball was collected by Goldson-Williams only miss the far post with his shot.

The visitor’s McMichael almost got in behind the home defence except that Joe Braithwaite’s good stretch got the ball back to Danny Bircham while at the other end Deeping’s Avis freed Hamid who pulled back for Dan Flack to drive goal wards where McAlinden saved well.

Sileby levelled on 21 mins - a Deeping backpass saw Braithwaite and Bircham leave it for the other and as Muzvimbiri collected he was tugged back by Braithwaite who was fortunate that the referee awarded only a penalty and no other punishment – Stuart McMichael’s spot kick just beat the dive of Bircham into the corner of the net.

The visitors were close when Cottingham’s cross was headed wide by Allen and Deeping’s Hamid set up Liam Tunstall only to find the side netting.

As the game went towards half time it became scrappy and the home side became guilty of over playing, Arsenal esk, as they searched for the breakthrough although Coulson almost managed it after he wriggled free in the box to see his shot go across the face of the goal and away from danger.

Half Time – Deeping Rangers 1 Northampton Sileby Rangers 1

The second half continued as the first had finish with the fare being of a poor level.

A rare goal threat came from Hamid’s corner where Tinkler found good space to have a free header that hit a defender on the line and fell to McAlinden’s hands.

Deeping were having the better of possession and made the decisive move on 61 mins when Coulson played Matt Carter free wide right and his deep cross found sub Ian Ward at the far post to head home past the stranded McAlinden.

The goal sparked the game a little, Goldson-Williams collected outside his own box and advanced to the visitor’s box but was halted by Randy Bondjanga's challenge while Sileby’s Jon Bukasa held off Carter’s challenge only to waste with a poor cross.

Coulson was featuring well for the home side and exchanged passes with Adam Scotcher to cross for Avis whose volley was high over the bar.

As the game drew to a finish the visitors were in the ascendancy, Dominic Okanu almost punished the home defence but his shot was deflected wide, he then collected from Bukasa and shot when a cross would have found Muzvimbiri at the far post.
Bukasa’s fine touch set up Dan Dineen but he shot at Bircham and Bukasa’s shot on the turn was wide of the target.

Deeping survived the spell of visitors pressure and finished almost adding to their tally when Scotcher collected, held up until Goldson-Williams arrived to shoot goalwards that had McAlinden scrambling the ball away.

After the reverse against Yaxley, Deeping just about warranted the win and secured 3 more points as they chase a top 6 finish
