Rangers penalty success sees them to Hinchinbrook semi's

Match Scribe

Rangers welcomed high flying Eastern Counties League Godmanchetser Rovers for this Hinchinbrooke Cup Quarter Final and progressed into the ...

Semi Final after a competitive match that had to be settled on penalties.

It was Deeping who made the early breakthrough when, in the 5th minute, Charlie Coulson sent Dan Flack in behind the Goddy defense and he coolly lobbed the oncoming keeper Niall Conroy into the unguarded net.

Another Rangers move saw Tom Smith play a 1-2 with Coulson and get into the visiting box but Matty Bannister made a good challenge forcing Smith to pull his shot wide.

At the other end the lively Tom Meecham got onto a through ball and as he attempted to shoot Joe Braithwaite made a very timely challenge to clear the danger, Meecham then made the most of a Tom Palmer slip only to see Braithwaite on hand again to thwart the danger.

As the game ebbed and flowed Smith had a run at the heart of the Goddy defense only to shoot high.

Braithwaite was again to Rangers rescue when the tricky Tom Spark combined with Meecham to progress into the Deeping box for Joe to clear again.

Flack's flick on released Jamie Graham to run at the visiting goal to see his attempt past the advancing Conroy and the post.

Rovers equalised on 24 mins. Palmer miscontrolled and Hyem picked up and ran at the home defense where a foul halted his progress. Mike Hyem took the kick himself and from 25 yards he found the top corner to give the stranded Danny Bircham little chance.

Goody were bouyed and had a good spell, Meecham fed Oliver Emsdem whos first time shot was straight at Bircham, Austin Diaper then combined with Meecham whose good cross was cleared out to Bannister who effort was narrowly wide of the far post.

Deeping were still showing well and David Burton-Jones got the better of the Goddy defense, got to the goal line and sent in a good cross that Smith at the post almost got to it but the ball hit him and went the wrong side of the post.

Hyem had another free kick attempt but was high.

As half time approached Rangers best move of the half brought their second goal - Burton-Jones won the ball, made progress across the pitch to play in Smith behind the Rovers defense, his cross shot found Matt Carter at the far post to slide home.

Half Time - Deeping Rangers 2 Godmanchetser Rovers 1

The second half continued in the same competitive vein although the goal attempts were less threatening.

Deeping's Graham and Coulson swiftly exchanged passes but Graham shot wide, Ryan Oliver's cross from the goal line saw Tylor Parr slice his clearance past the post.

Goddy's Hyem collected the ball just outside his own area and made ground to the opposite box but Rovers took too many touches and the opportunity had gone, Meecham was then onto a through ball and advanced and shot that Bircham saved with his legs.

Smith's cross found Graham, he took a side step and curled his shot against the Goddy crossbar with Conroy beaten and Rangers thought they should have had a penalty when Jordan Avis was played into the box and looked to have been tripped.

With Rangers almost over the finish line Rovers equalised. Braithwaite's attempt to clear looked as though it was hampered by a foul, but the referee was unconvinced, and as Rangers struggled to regroup Meecham's run was halted on the 18 yard line (looked as though it could have been inside) and Michael Hyem repeated his first half goal scoring when he blasted the ball home on 88 minutes - the foul also saw Palmer collect his second yellow card of the night.

The last opportunity of the game fell to the visitors. A home attack broke up and a swift clearance sent Meecham free where he sent a fierce cross where Hyem almost met it but the header was just over the bar.

A good contest between two matched sides and Rangers also saw the return, from injury of Scott Ginty, for a 55 minute run out - could be significant for the run in to the season.

Full Time - Deeping Rangers 2 Godmanchetser Rovers 2
