Rangers set up clash with Rovers

Match Scribe

Rangers took on the Eagles in this Hinchingbrooke Cup tie in what turned out to be a clash between two sides intent on playing football but ....

was Deeping who showed the more guile in punishing the mistakes made by the visitors while providing a stern defense that Stotfold rarely looked like breaking.

It was the visitors who had the first chance when Kier Boyd picked up a pass from George Bates but he saw his shot saved by the legs of home keeper Danny Bircham and fortunately for Rangers Spencer Tinkler was on hand to complete the goal line clearance as the ball fell towards the goal.

Deeping's first opportunity came on 7 minutes and Adam Scotcher punished the Eagles - he collected the ball on the edge of the box, he turned Ryan Ellis took a couple of strides into the box and smashed the ball past the advancing visiting keeper Adam Harper to give Rangers the lead.

With both sides settling into fluid possession Stotfold's Boyd collected a Joe Braithwaite's headed clearance and hit a first time shot that was wide of the far post.

A quick free kick from Tinkler sent Scotcher free down the left, he cut in along the goal line bringing a smart save from Harper.

It was Scotcher who doubled Deeping's lead on 27 minutes - a kick from deep by Bircham went straight through the middle of the Eagles defense to find Adam Scotcher, he took a touch that rounded Harper and slid the ball home into the unprotected goal.

Another ball into the heart of the Stotfold defense saw both Jamie Graham and Scotcher challenge for the ball with the ball falling to Scotcher who was thwarted by a good save by Harper.

Graham inadvertently slipped as he controlled the ball and visiting midfileder Jaiden Irish nipped the ball away to free Bates whose shot from the edge of the box was wide of the far post.

Half Time - Deeping Rangers 2 Stotfold 0

Deeping sub Ian Ward had a strong run down the right and sent in a cross that Scotcher met but his header was easily taken by Harper, a Stotfold corner by Charlie Joy was met by Irish only to see his header high over the bar.

Rangers seemed to be still in the half time break as the Eagles started to have the better of the possession and a quick break saw Joy collect, cut inside and try an audacious chip that Bircham manged to get his hands to.

Although both sides were seeing good midfield play there was little goalmouth action as long range efforts failed to hit the target and good play was lacking the final pass or thwarted by good interceptions.

Rangers made certain of the victory on 70 minutes - a ball into the visitors box from Matt Carter found skipper David Burton-Jones, he controlled, turned and slid the ball past the approaching Harper.

Adam Pennington almsot created a consolation for the visitors but his run into the box was halted by a good challenge from Tinkler.

Deeping's Dan Flack thought he should have had a penalty when he was tripped as he progressed in the box and teammate Scotcher also looked to the referee when he was fouled in the box but nothing was forthcoming.

The Eagles Boyd collected 30 yards out and blasted goalwards that had Bircham at full stretch to finger tip the ball wide of the post and from the resultant corner Tom Gornell shot at the far post only to see it rebound from the post.

Stotfold's impressive Pennington had a good run into the box but his cross could not find a teammate.

Rnagers now face Thurlow Nunn Godmanchester Rovers in teh last eight.
