Rangers and Fenmen share the honours in draw

Match Scribe

Deeping entertained a Wisbech team after both had advanced into the 3rd Round of the Vase and both sides will feel that they could have gained ...

all 3 points.

In a game that was lively from the start the Fenmen's Billy Smith was first to threaten with a long range effort that failed to trouble Danny Bircham.

Rangers skipper David Burton-Jones met Charlie Coulson's corner and his header saw Lea Jordan, in the visiting goal, save at full stretch, Burton-Jones then collected the ball 40 yards out and tried from long range but high over the bar.

The visitors Smith cut inside to make Bircham to save low at the near post, then the home keeper was scrambling away Danny Beaumont's shot on the turn from 25 yards.

A misplaced Deeping pass let in Stuart Cobb whose shot brought a fine finger tip save from Bircham.

Ranger's youngster Coulson had a dazzling run evading three challenges only to shoot weakly at Jordan in the away goal.

Both sides were trading offensive threats - Steven Reid played a 1-2 with Josh Ford to shoot wide from edge of the box, Deeping's Ian Ward wriggled free in the box and shot on the turn brought a good save from Jordan.

Jamie Graham had a fine run through the middle of the visitors defense but delayed his shot letting a defender to block - a pass to ward in space looked the better option.

The Fenmen's Scott Johnson got in behind the home defense only to Bircham do well with a point blank save

The deadlock was broken as the home side took the lead on 37 minutes - Adam Scotcher won the ball and his pass released Ian Ward into space to slot past the advancing Jordan.

Ward almost got in again but his shot was blocked for a corner and the half finished as Wisbech's Cobb cross/shot from wide struck the cross bar and out of danger.

Half Time - Deeping Rangers 1 Wisbech Town 0

With the Fenmen stinging from an half time rebuke from Manager Creasey, the ball was played deep into the home box where Ford's effort on the turn was thwarted by another close save from Bircham - Beaumont struck a fine shot from the edge of the box that Bircham took well.

The visitors were increasing the pressure and the home defense were just about keeping them out while at the other end Rangers were still getting chances to increase their advantage.

Spencer Tinkler glanced his header wide from Ward's corner and then Burton-Jones won possession in midfield to release Graham free on the right, wriggled into the box but rather than shooting he chose to pass to sub Jezz Goldson-Williams who was thwarted by a desperate interception from Neal Spafford.

Bircham again saved at point blank range as Tommy Treacher turned to force home Reid's header.

Ranger's Graham's fine pass found Tom Smith whose shot was deflected onto the post,

The inevitable equaliser came on 83. Deeping failed to properly clear a Fenmen corner and Nathan Horne picked up the ball and crossed the Rangers box to cross back to the far post where Stuart Cobb was on hand to hit the ball home.

Almost from the restart Goldson-Williams was set free for Deeping, getting in between defender and goalkeeper only to place his effort wide while at the other end another point blank save from Bircham kept out Cobb's header.

Some fine displays from the Ranger's players with the most notable being keeper Danny Bircham and skipper David Burton-Jones - both immense on the night.
