Rangers tame the Dragon to make Round 2 of the Vase

Match Scribe

Rangers entered this season's FA Vase competition when they entertained visitors Wivenhoe, from the Thurlow Nunn League, and ....

had the major share of dominance in the game but had to rely on a Joe Braithwaite strike on 76 minutes to progress to the 2nd round.

It was the Dragons who had the first chance when Hasan Ayten found himself free at the far post but his snapshot was too high.

Deeping saw a number of opportunities not taken, Scott Ginty released Jezz Goldson-Williams down the left into the box but he took too long and the defender made the tackle, Tom Smith's raking cross field pass found Ginty on the right and his sublime touch freed Joradn Avis into the box only to be thwarted by a good tackle from Tyler Rogers.

Goldson-Williams' effort won the ball to release Matt Carter down the left to see the ball taken from his toes by teh tackle from Andy Schofield.

Rangers' Avis then jiggled his way to the goal line and tried his luck with a near post shot which brought a quick save form Dragons keeper Peter Haxell

Both sides were often guilty of not completing their passes as they went astray as the game became messy.

A rare Wivenhoe foray into the depth of the home defense full back Schofield won the ball in his own half and drove forward before driving the ball high over the bar from the edge of the box.

Deeping's Smith and Carter combined well to free Smith whose cross was just too high for Goldson-Williams but Avis got his head to the ball into the arms of Haxell, a Ginty corner found David Burton-Jones free but his header was a poor contact and straight at Haxell.

The Smith-Carter combination released Smith to the edge of the visiting box but a weak shot did not test Haxell and then Carter set Goldson-Williams free down the left but indecision waste the chnace.

Wivenhoe finished the half with Conrad Whitby finding Ben Parkin in the box but his shot on the turn had no power and Ayten got in behind the home defense only to cross weakly to home custodian Danny Bircham

Half Time - Deeping Rangers 0 Wivenhoe Town

The second half started with much the same as the first half and digressed as neither side could invent ways to create defense beating situations.

Rangers made some substitutions to try and change their play and some good dominance occurred with good play freed Dan Flack down the right and a good cross saw Dragons defender deal well and take the ball just as Carter was about to apply a finishing touch, Smith's good play down the left the set up Ian Ward whose effort was just over the bar and Smith then played in Carter but his shot was straight at Haxell

The decisive breakthrough came on 76 minutes as a Ginty free kick was flicked on by Burton-Jones found Joe Braithwaite at the far post to fire home with side foot volley past the helpless visiting defenders on the line.

Deeping now saw a quicker opponent as the Dragons worked to find an equaliser although their efforts did not really trouble the home defense and it was the home side who were more likely to add to their tally - a Ginty free kick was met by Burton-Jones whose header brought a fine finger tip save from Haxell.

Jamie Graham combined well with Flack to release him down the right to pull back into the path of sub Charlie Coulson whose shot was just wide of the far post, Coulson then had a shot just over the bar and the final chnace came as Flack broke down the right to cross for Ward but the ball was well defended by the Dragons' Tim Dennis.

On the balance it was a justified victory for Rangers to progress into Round 2 - they will have to do more to make Round 3!!
