After a great first season for the Ladies, we wanted to catch up with their Head of Football to talk about the role.

James - How and why did you get involved in DRFC?

Sarah - My husband was given the opportunity to start a ladies team at Deeping Rangers, as he has been coaching for some time. I help out where I can but I think I am definitely more suited to other roles and responsibilities! I know how much the club want to put themselves on the map with girls’ football and I want to help them achieve that. Some may think that we are a little late to the party but I’d like to think that we’re just fashionably late and we’ve certainlymade an entrance!

James - What has been the highlight of season 1?

Sarah - Finishing fourth in their first season is not something that I want the Ladies to take lightly, I am really proud of them. Their attitudes and respect for themselves and each other is, without question, the best I have ever known from any team and club that I have been involved with. They set the standard of what we expect from our teams.

James - Where do you see the women and girls section?

Sarah - It’s really important to me that, as a club, we take our time and grow organically. It would be very easy to open the doors and start teams throughout each and every age group when in reality we’re not ready for that. I want each and every team, coaches, players and parents to feel that they are an integral part of Deeping Rangers and I will not allow that to be diluted. I want every team to feel proud of being a part of the club. We currently have an incredible U10’s team and we look to increase our offering next season.

James - What can people do to help?

Sarah - The main thing for the women and girl’s section is to come and support and spread the word!
If you’re a local business then consider sponsoring a team, we always need new kits and equipment.

James - How much does the game owe to the success of the lionesses?

Sarah - Nobody can deny that the Lionesses’ success in the Euros, a couple of years ago, has given the women and girl’s game a huge boost. Let’s not forget though that the accessibility has been slowly increasing over the past few years but it has made the game more available in educational settings which in turn will encourage girls to play football and other sports at the weekends rather than finding themselves pigeon-holed.

James - How can parents or potential players get in touch?

Sarah - They can contact myself on 07757 698849
