A final with both sides in familiar surroundings

A final with both sides in familiar surroundings

James Warrener6 May - 05:42

There are plenty of connections with host Yaxley FC tonight on both sides.

Both March and Deeping wont need directions to host ground Yaxley FC for tonights Hinchingbrooke Cup final.

There are former Cuckoos players and staff across both clubs and here is a brief list of those who have featured at Leading Drove and will need no introduction to any neutrals who might have a walk down to watch.

March Town
Simon Roberts (Assistant Manager) - was successful Yaxley reserves and first team manager having taken over when the club was relegated back into the UCL in 2023. Robbo oversaw a run that almost took them into the play offs before being replaced early last season.

Dan Cotton (Player) - A hero of that UCL winning Yaxley side and well known for his spells with both Stamford and the Cuckoos. Dotty was part of the FA Vase run to the last 16 under Brett Whaley and will be guaranteed to know every inch of that pitch tonight.

Jack Saunders - Part of the Cuckoos side in those twenty teens and a goal threat from left back or left midfield in that team. Much loved by the fans and was player of the season at YFC.

Jack Withers/Denny Escorcio/Harvey Henderson (and others)

Deeping Rangers
Brett Whaley (Manager) - Took the Cuckoos on when legend Gary Clipston left the club and was successful in two spells including multiple top five UCL finishes. Son of Malcolm Whaley who was the Yaxley goalkeeper throughout the 1980s in their all conquering Peterborough League side.

Chris Lenton (Assistant Manager) - Son of former YFC Chairman and life President Jeff Lenton. A man whose 20 years plus at the helm saw cups and a UCL Championship won. Lenny was part of the early 2000's Cuckoos side who regularly over achieved in the FA Cup.

Aaron Butcher - Popular figure at the club who in a number of spells was a successul member of Yaxley teams.

Spencer Tinkler - Played at step 4 for Yaxley including that day he never lets you forget when, without a goalkeeper he went in nets and played a heroes part in a 1-1 draw with non-league giants Cambridge City.

Finley Henderson - Part of the play off chasing side from last season as well as Simon Roberts' reserves.

Luke Hunnings - The only bright spot in the Yaxley relegation season, solid and dependable at the back he was easily player of that season.

Liam Hook - Part of the UCL winning side at the Drove. Another who is held in high esteem by Cuckoos fans

Scott Waumsley - Like Hunnings had to be part of a struggling side in the Northern Premier League. But never took a step back.

Josh Moreman, Olek Muzychuk, Enoch Opayinka and others.
