Mooney brace warms up Rangers at Ratby Lane
This game was played in bitter conditions and was only braved by the ‘hardy souls’ (more than half of the on ground spectators being of Deeping persuasion) as both teams battled to overcome ...
the elements – periods of snow flurry’s and sunshine and a heavy pitch.
Rangers took an early lead on 7 mins, Henry Dunn fed Jason Kilbride wide, his low cross into the home box was cleared away by Simon Alcott only to find Dunn who drove his shot on target where Scott Mooney stooped low to head the ball inside the near post past the dive of Warren Butlin.
Opportunities were rare at either end, the home side had a couple of half chances, a long ball from defence picked out Carl Benson, a twist and shot was well blocked by the Clarets’ Jonny Clay, Jordan Lever threaded a pass through the Deeping defence to find Aiden Black, his touch taking the ball wide as Clay closed him down.
The home surprisingly leveled on 25 mins, Levi Fray retrieved a long corner, he curled his cross into the goal area where Benson looked to have fouled Ranger keeper Danny Bircham who spilled the ball where Muxloe skipper Sam Wilson was on hand to lash home.
Deeping’s Sam Hollis was sent free down the left, his run in to the box was halted by a good challenge from Sean Doy.
It was the visitors who made the decisive breakthrough on 38 mins, Chris Hollist played the ball into Mooney, his turn allowed space to pick out Scott Coupland on the edge of the box, he rounded Butlin twice before driving the ball home past a couple of defenders on the line.
As half time loomed Rangers extended their lead on 44 mins, Dunn’s dink pass found Mooney in the box who instinctively lobbed approaching Butlin to see the ball fall into the empty net.
The half ended with a deluge of snow as the players made their way back to the dressing rooms.
Half Time –Kirby Muxloe 1 Deeping Rangers 3
Thankfully the players returned to a period of bright sunshine for the start of the second half, unfortunately the fare offered soon settled into a game where both sides battled the conditions with the aim of getting to the end and into the warm.
Kirby had a couple of part chances, Tyler Love supplied Aaron Black in the box, his shot being well blocked by Luke Hunnings, Aiden Black progressed into the box to pull back for Benson to scuff his shot that bobbled through to Bircham.
Deeping were close when Michael Simpson laid off to Hollis whose shot was straight at Butlin.
Another 3 points for Rangers that keeps them in the mix in an intriguing multi team contest for the top places in the League as the season concludes.
