The travelling contingent were in an optimistic mood at the MEL Group Stadium ...

for this Emirates FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round Replay, having seen Rangers arguably shade the first game 3 days earlier, but they were quickly shaken as the home side opened the scoring on 51 seconds, Harry Critchley’s ball into the goal area being swiftly despatched by Sean Marks – not the start that the Clarets wanted.

Rangers responded perfectly, Dan Jarvis thrust forward, a 1-2 with Scott Mooney and a strike at goal making keeper Paul Walker make a fine save.

From the Dan Flack corner Sam Murphy rose at the near post to guide his header inside the post for the equaliser on 4 mins. (1-1).

This was the start of a terrific game of football as both teams went toe to toe in an effort to secure a visit to Step 3 side Hendon in the next round.

Dan Banister delivered a great cross into the box, Mooney got in between the central defender to steer his header towards the inside of the post where Walker’s fine flying save tipped the ball away.

The home side’s Ben Hunter delivered a good corner for Billy Holland to meet but glanced the header wide, at the other end Mooney collected a loose ball from Baris Altintop, he played to Jordan Macleod whose shot was well blocked.

Suds Liam Bennett was fed by Freddie King, he cut inside to drive low that narrowly missed, Jarvis won well for the Clarets, he supplied Mooney who in turn released Macleod, the shot from the edge of the box being just wide of the near post.

It was little surprise that another goal came and it was the visitors who scored, Charlie Coulson sent a ball over the home back line, Macleod gathered on the run before unleashing a fine shot beating Walker just inside the post on 23 mins (1-2).

Sudbury went close, King wriggled his way to the edge of the box, he laid into the path of Harry Critchley whose efoort brought a fine tip over save from Rangers keeper Lewis Elsom, Elsom then saved well from Hunter’s close range attempt.

Marks had a shot pull wide for the home side while Macleod saw another try narrowly miss the target and the half closed as Bennett’s super touch allowed him space to get into the box, Elsom stood tall and made a good save on his post.

Half Time – Sudbury 1 Deeping Rangers 2

The half time talk was certain of more goals in the second half and the crowd were not disappointed as the game continued to ebb and flow.

Deeping were close to increasing their lead, Jarvis laid for Coulson to drive from 30 yards, the effort smashing against the bar and away, David Burton-Jones sent Macleod down the left, he cut inside before fizzing one just by the far post

It was Sudbury who scored next to draw level, Marks looked to be offside but he kept his focus and slid the past the advancing Elsom on 52 mins for 2-2’

The Clarets were back in front on 62 mins, Elsom long clearance was flicked on by Mooney, Macleod took it in his stride to blast from just inside the box past the helpless Walker (2-3).

It was getting tense now, Clarets Luke Andersen curled in a good ball towards Mooney at the far post, keeper Walker’s attempt to clear saw the ball rebound from the bar, Mooney’s touch saw Jarvis being unable to get the ball out from his feet to get a shot in.

The home side saw a couple of opportunities, sub Ellis Girling ran at the visitors back line, his pass saw Tom Dettmar get a weak touch with the ball falling for Elsom to gather, Holland had a 20 yard free kick in a good position but skied the attempt.

With additional time being played Deeping had a glorious chance to increase their advantage, a weak Walker clearance presented Jezz Adam with the ball just inside the box, he tried to find space to get past the defender on the line which allowed time for Walker to get back and make the save.

Finally, after 8 mins of additional time referee Grant brought proceedings to an end and it was the Clarets who progressed to the Emirates FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round tie against Hendon and over the two games I think they probably deserved to.
