Rangers entertained Step 4 AFC Sudbury for this Emirates FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round tie and ....

had to settle for a replay despite taking an 81st minute lead only for the visitors to level 3 minutes later.

Deeping saw early chances, Scott Mooney’s touch allowed Jordan Macleod a shot was well blocked away, Macleod then controlled Dan Flack’s deep cross to bring a good save from Sudbury keeper Paul Walker.

The Yellows’ Tom Maycock sent in a corner where Joe Grimwood rose, the header being high of the target, the impressive youngster Liam Bennett was getting a lot of freedom down the right, his cross saw Sean Marks get a head to the ball under pressure from home custodian Lewis Elsom but wide of the target, Bennett found himself in the box, his shot being well saved by Elsom.

A Maycock cross picked out Ethan Mayhew at the far post, his touch on the stretch did not trouble Elsom, Bennett’s fine pass allowed Mayhew a shot that clipped Luke Hunnings on the way to Elsom.

Rangers’ Charlie Coulson supplied Macleod on the edge of the box, he created space to blast at goal where Walker saved with his legs while at the other end the Yellows Tom Dettmar delivered a fine low cross into the home goal area, Flack just nicked the ball away as Mayhew looked to pounce, Suds skipper Joe Wright saw his long range low effort fizz by the post.

The visitors made the breakthrough on 35 mins, Ben Hunter’s fine cross picked out Marks who planted his header past Elsom from 5 yards (for 0-1).

Deeping responded well, Coulson played Dan Jarvis in, he advanced to lay for Mooney to drive at the target, his effort being blocked by Billy Holland, Luke Andersen’s good pass allowed Macleod to send in a cross where Jarvis met but the header was too high.

Half Time – Deeping Rangers 0 Sudbury 1

The game continued in the same vein, Jarvis had an early Clarets chance, the shot flying over and The Suds’ Ben Hunter was similarly off target having been teed up by Maycock.

Mooney’s pass split the visitors defence, Dan Banister collected and his cross from the goal line picked out Jarvis who glanced the header wide of the far post, Dan Flack exchanged passes with Banister to get sight of goal, his low drive being taken by Walker.

A swift Rangers break had a 3 on 2 situation, Banister fed Mooney, his first time pass picked out Macleod on the far side whose shot was well defended by the recovering Grimwood.

Sudbury’s Marks pounced on a loose ball just in the box, his attempted shot was hampered by a good challenge from home skipper David Burton-Jones and the ball was pushed away by the diving Elsom.

Rangers levelled on 66 mins, Banister’s touch found Macleod, he turned and took the ball over the defender and then blasted past the approaching Walker (1-1)

Macleod was close again, he collected from Flack’s pass to drive at goal, the ball clipping a defender and diverting from the target, he then beat the offside to square for Jarvis whose effort was blocked by Baris Altintop.

The Clarets took the lead on 81 mins, Flack was fouled just outside the box, Macleod laid the free kick to his left for Mooney to drive into the top corner beyond the dive of Walker. (2-1)

Within 3 mins Sudbury were on level terms again, substitute Freddie King was found wide left, he cut inside to the corner of the before sending a low drive inside the post beyond the outstretched leg of Elsom.

With time almost up the visitors had the last chance, Marks laid for King to strike from the edge of the box, but tamely straight at Elsom.
At the end a draw was about right but Rangers might have recorded another scalp, if the chances had been taken, but they would still have a chance when the sides meet in the replay.
