No Christmas cheer for Rangers as old boy Avis nets winner
Rangers slumped to a South Lincs derby defeat at Carters Park against a Tigers side who played almost an hour with ...
10 men following the 35th minute sending off of Mitch Griffiths.
The home side had the first attempt when Griffiths found ex Ranger Luke Avis in the box, he controlled and turned to shoot where keeper Richard Stainsby was positioned to take.
Deeping had their best spell, Scott Coupland’s pass sent Dan Schiavi free to get to the home box where the shot was at Ricky Drury, Scott Mooney won on half way, his defence splitting pass fed Schiava in behind the Tigers back line but Drury narrowed down well with the ball falling for Coupland to chip towards the goal but finished wide of the target.
It was the Tigers who made the decisive break on 15 mins, Will Bird was fed wide, his pull back eventually found Avis who found the net at the second attempt.
The Clarets saw a good move with Dan Flack driving in a low cross/shot, the clearance falling for Henry Dunn to blast at goal for Drury to make a good save.
Griifths collected a clearance and advanced along the box before shooting low at Stainsby – that was to be his last contribution as he received a red card for his challenge on Flack.
While Flack was off the pitch receiving treatment Jonny Clay picked up a nasty injury that led to him being taken off (and a subsequent hospital visit).
Half Time – Holbeach United 1 Deeping Rangers 0
The second half was full of endeavour but little goal threat as the visitors were unable to take advantage of the extra man.
Mooney sent a ball into the home box, Michael Simpson closed down Drury who skewed his clearance where Simpson’s header was narrowly off target.
Deeping sub Jason Kilbride cut inside to shoot high from the edge of the box.
Holbeach sub Joe Smith capitalised on a loose ball to progress towards goal where Stainsby saved well on the edge of the box.
As time ebbed away Schiavi’is pass found Mooney, he held off the challenge of Stacy Cartwright to get a shot away but too high for the target.
Rangers run of poor results at Carters Park continued and it is hard to argue that they deserved any more than they got.
