Rangers headed out of Vase Round 4 history

Rangers exited the Buildbase FA Vase at the 3rd Round stage again as they succumbed to a couple of ‘set piece’ goals as their Step 6 hosts ....

claimed another higher grade scalp.

The home side burst out of the blocks and Luke Richards was quickly shooting goal wards where Jonny Clay was well placed to block away.

Deeping’s resolve was strong and that enabled the side to settle into ‘their game’ and started to exert control on proceedings, Scott Coupland’s quick throw allowed Tom Smith to sling in a good cross where Henry Dunn arrived ahead of Dominic Perkins to head marginally wide of the target, a neat move down their right saw Dan Flack send in a low cross for Scott Mooney whose snap touch was wide at the far post.

Hinckley’s Isaac Cooper curled in a dangerous free kick where Deeping keeper Richard Stainsby rose through the throng to positively punch away, at the other end Flack’s pass allowed Dunn to fire in a low cross for Coupland to see his shot hit a home defender and away from goal.

It was the home side, against the run of play, who opened the scoring, Marcus Jackson’s ball picked out Steve Hart, he cut inside along the box to drive a low shot beyond the dive of Stainsby inside the post on 24 mins.

Rangers almost responded immediately, Dunn intercepted a pass bound for Perkins, subsequent play saw Dan Schiavi fire wide from the edge of the box.

AFC’s Cooper collected from a clearance from his corner to fizz a shot just over the bar from 25 yards.

The Clarets (although in the yellow away kit) levelled on 34 mins, skipper David Burton-Jones sent Mooney raiding on goal, he crossed to find Burton-Jones whose shot was parried by Ty Belford for Coupland to blast home from three yards.

Deeping had further chances as half time approached, Mooney attempt to finish another good move was just wise of the target and Schiavi’s shot hit a defender to deflect away from while the home side’s Jake Healy pounced on a loose ball to drive just over the bar.

Half Time – Hinckley AFC 1 Deeping Rangers 1

Rangers continued to press, Schiavi ran at the home defence, his pass allowed Coupland to look for Mooney, the ball being a little short and intercepted by Asa Wright.

The game became more evenly contested, Hinckley’s Hart flick allowed Richards space to run at the Deeping defence where Flack and Luke Hunnings combined to block the effort, Cooper’s ball into the box saw Jackson drive low to bring a fine save from Stainsby.

Deeping’s cause was not helped as Burton-Jones limped off on 58 mins, Coulson collected mid half to progress to shoot high from the edge of the box.

Hinckley were having their best spell, Jackson’s long cross picked out Hart, he fizzed a shot narrowly wide and then they retook the lead on 68 mins, Cooper’s long throw into the visitors box saw Perkins flick it goal wards where Stainsby tipped it onto the bar, unfortunately for Rangers to ball fell indie the post to nestle in the net.

AFC were close again as Hart’s flick brought a good save from Stainsby for Hunnings to complete the clearance however they extended their lead 72 mins, Cooper curled in a free kick to the far post where James Williams rose to head back into the far corner past the effort of Stainsby to keep it out.

Hart showed his strength to progress intoi the box to shoot and bring a fine low save from Stainsby, Clay completing the clearance

Rangers saw Hunnings meet a Schiavi corner, but was high, he then connected to Flack’s lob forward with the touch hitting a defender and going wide, Mooney took Louis Hamilton’s flick in his stride to progress to the corner of the box to shoot high under pressure from Perkins.

Mooney’s cross was flicked on by home defender Williams for Coupland to hit first time wide of the far post anmd Mooney connected with Hunnings’ touch to flash wide.

AFC were very close with the final attempt, Hart collected on half way to run to the edge of the box and steered his shot to the far post only to see it rebound and go away.

Rangers will look back at the chances that could have been as they are left to concentrate on their League campaign and a visit to table topping Pagnell next weekend.
