Mooney's late late strike sees Rangers scrape home
The openness of the Old Northamptonians Sports Ground gave this game the feel of a ‘park contest’ and unfortunately the spectators saw a game that would not have ..
been out of place on a park pitch as Rangers nicked the three points with Scott Mooney’s strike in additional time at the end of the game.
Both goalkeepers were rarely threatened as both sides struggled to overcome the conditions and the defence of the opponents.
Chenecks were close, a corner was cleared by the Deeping defence for Luke Tolworthy to drive wide of the post from the edge of the box.
Rangers’ Tom Smith was fed by Charlie Coulson, the return was dummied by Coulson to allow Scott Mooney a shot which was well defended by Sam Watkins, Mooney was narrowly short of applying a touch, in the six yard box, to Smith’s cross from the goal line.
Referee Todd allowed Calvin Budd to take a free kick a good 12 yards infield of the incident, his drive heading for the top corner until Luke Hunning’s head diverted away for a corner.

The start of second half was looking more dismal for the fans as a rain shower started as the teams came out.
Chenecks Adam Spalding’s pass inside Jason Kilbride allowed Tolworthy to the goal line, the cross being well dealt with by Jonny Clay at the near post.
Deeping debutant Louis Hamilton sent in a dangerous cross that had Watkins at full stretch to head clear where Smith collected to drive wide of the target from 30 yards.
Home sub Jacob Ollivier was played into the Deeping box, his chip missed at the far top corner, Chief Boateng then pounced on a loose ball to blast high over from the edge of the box.
The home were very close when Budd’s free kick crashed against the post, a swift break saw Smith free Dan Schiavi, he found Mooney who returned into Schiavi’s path where the shot was well blocked by Watkins.
Deeping had their best period of the game, Schiavi’s corner was headed back into the mix by Hunnings where David Burton-Jones saw his header cleared from the line by Spalding, Schiavi’s free kick was parried by Joe Pursell, Mooney pounced to touch goal wards (with Pursell saving again for the ball to fall for Clay to drive home) only for an offside decision to be given - difficult to see where that came from from my viewpoint!!
Danny Bircham’s deep free kick was flicked on by Hunnings, Mooney’s attempt to lob Pursell was almost successful but Pursell just managed to stretch enough to collect at the 2nd attempt.
Rangers were still pushing as time up came, Mooney was found in the box, he laid off for Scott Coupland to shoot, the rebound fell to Mooney, a touch, turn and drive saw the ball nestle in the corner of the net (90+1 mins) much to the vast relief of the Rangers contingent.
