Kings Lynn 2 Rangers 1

Written by Lindsay Williamson.

Deeping Rangers were out of the traps like a steam train at 'The Walks', in this United Counties Premier League clash. Keen to make amends for the 5-1 reversal earlier in the season, the Rangers forwards set about their task in such a way as to leave the Lynn defence in some disarray.

As early as the fifth minute, Mark Jones had a golden oppourtunity to open the scoring, but saw his shot go inches wide of the upright. Then, a short time later, the same player missed another chance, just failing to connect with a Josh Moreman cross. It looked as if the home side, who were lacking a couple of players through injury, were going to be overwhelmed, but after Matt Heron failed to convert a good looking chance, a sluggish looking Lynn got their game together and started to make chances of their own.

It was a quater of an hour before Doughty in the Rangers goal was called on to make his first save of the match, and then on twenty minutes, the home side hit the woodwork after a darting run from Spriggs out on the right wing. However, as the half progressed, Rangers continued to look the better side and the most likely to score the first goal of the night. But football being the game it is, on twenty five minutes, it was the home side that took the lead against the run of play. Yet another lightning run from Spriggs, who proved to be lynn's most dangerous player all night, ended with a hard, low cross into the goalmouth, where the ball struck Rangers' centre half, Spencer Tinkler, and rebounded into the net for an own goal.

Undaunted, Rangers continued to press forward and just after the half hour mark, one such raid produced a goal for Josh Moreman, who sqeezed the ball home from the corner of the goal area.

The second half proved to  almost be a carbon copy of the first. Rangers were well on top, and the home side were beginning to feel the pressure from their fans, who, at times, seemed more desperate for the three points than their team. Matt Heron came closest to getting the second goal for Rangers when his shot, from distance, fooled the keeper who thought the ball was going wide, only to see it slide off the side of the goalpost. Logan forced the keeper into making a good save and mark Jones had two very good chances toward the end, including a one on one with the Lynn keeper, only to see the ball sail wide.

It really should have been Rangers' night, but it was not to be as Robbie Harris found himself well placed to score the second and winning goal for Lynn on eighty minutes. From that point on Lynn played 'keep-ball' and were determined not to give anything else away. Sometimes football can be a cruel game, but Deeping Rangers can hold their heads up high after this sterling performance which should at least provided a point.

Yaxley 0 Rangers 5

Written by Lindsay Williamson.

Deeping Rangers carried their recent run of good form to Yaxley where, on a grey, misty afternoon at Leading Drove, they ran riot against the struggling home side. Following on from victories over Holbeach, Spalding, Desborough and Rushden & Higham, scoring seventeen goals in the process, there was no stopping Rangers during the first half where wave after wave of attacking football was engineered. Even before the fifth minute when Matt Heron headed Rangers ahead, the same player had hit the bar and Josh Moreman had squandered a chance, hitting the ball straight at Yaxley keeper Tom Roberts, when clear through on goal.

Shortly after this Yaxley had their best oppourtunity to get on the score sheet, but when Davey found himself in front of the Rangers goal, with no defender or keeper in the way, he somehow contrived to miss, shaving a post in the process. In the eleventh minute, Josh Moreman earned the appreciation of the crowd with a fine individual goal. Cleverly working his way in from the byline, skipping round a defender, he blasted the ball home from an acute angle to give the visitore a two goal advantage.

At this time the football being played by Rangers was breath taking and more goals seemed sure to follow. On twenty two minutes Kevin Gilbert had an effort cleared off the line, but just six minutes later Rangers killed the game off when Josh Moreman connected with a Mark Jones cross to extend the lead to three.  It should really have been four by half time, but Mark Jones headed over the bar, just before the break. Yaxley were clearly frustrated at the turn of events and during the opening half collected three yellow cards.

The home side began the second half in a more positive frame of mind and attempted to get themselves back into the game. However, Rangers, despite going off the boil a little, remained firmly in control. On the hour mark Deeping obtained their fourth goal, when after a mix-up in defence, Matt Holland placed the ball into his own net. With tough looking fixtures against Holbeach and Long Buckby coming up, Tuncay Korkmaz, the Rangers manager decided to ring the changes for the final half hour. Burton-Jones replacing Matt Heron. Tony Battersby on for Kev Gilbert. And Jackson on for the mercurial Kevin Brader.

Towards the end of a miserable afternoon for Yaxley, Josh Moreman again found himself clear through only to shoot wide, but Mark Jones got goal number five in time added on. Shooting a long range effort from outside the box which somehow fooled keeper Roberts.

Rangers v Rushden & Higham

Written by Lindsay Williamson.

The writing was on the wall by the time the fifth minute had been completed for UCL Division One visitors Rushden & Higham. For by that time Rangers' Steve Julian had put the home side 2-0 up, both goals coming from the head of the centre half. And the opening stages were one way traffic as Deeping continued to apply the pressure. There was little to cheer the visitors despite some lively play from winger Jory Mann, and a goal, against the run of play, scored close in by Higham's number ten, Dyson.

Matt Heron saw a long range effort stroke the upright on the half hour mark, before new signing Logan scored the third for Deeping on thirty six minutes, heading in from a corner.

Half time; Deeping Rangers 3 Rushden & Higham 1

Tuncay Korkmaz, the Rangers' manager, was using the game to give most of his squad a run out, Kevin Gilbert being the first substitution for another new signing, Phil Stebbings. Stebbings had received a bad knock during the first half from Higham's number six, Merries, who earned himself a yellow card in the process. The second half saw Rangers completely overwhelm their opponents. Brader leading the charge with the fourth goal on fifty two minutes, and then the same player supplied Tony Battersby on fifty five minutes for 5-1.

On the hour mark Korkmaz made two furthur changes, bringing Evans on for Julian and Cox for Battersby. And it wasn't long before George Cox got himself onto the score sheet with a neat finish from an assist from Gilbert. Rushden & Higham battled on bravely, but they could not stop Rangers adding two furthur goals, both from Josh Moreman in the seventy-seventh and eighty-fourth minutes. This result sets up a tasty looking match in the next round against current Premier League table toppers, Peterborough Northern Star.

Result; Deeping Rangers 8 Rushden & Higham 1

Rangers; Doughty - Tinkler - Jackson - Logan - Julian(Evans) - Weston - Brader - Stebbings(Gilbert) - Battersby(Cox) - Heron - Moreman

Rangers 2 Desborough 0

Written by Lindsay Williamson.

They say there are no easy games in football, and the truth of this saying was proved during Rangers' latest clash for UCL points. With just one win to their name and only five points on the board, Desborough Town arrived at Outgang Road propping the rest of the division up. And when Mark Jones, a player on a great run of form at the moment, slotted home as early as the third minute, it looked as if expectations of a heavy home win were about to be realised. But Desborough went on to prove that they are not the whipping boys that many people believe.

Yes, they set about the game with the intention of breaking down Rangers with some heavy tackling, and the football played throughout the game, could never be described as pretty. But Rangers have to adapt to this kind of opposition. The first half play was very scrappy and became disjointed at times through wayward passing and  Desborough's back four policy of "They shall not pass." Visiting captain Byrne and full back Tolton both recieving yellow cards for hefty challenges. Shortly before half time Rangers almost conceded a penalty when, during a rare foray toward goal, Spencer Tinkler brought Mitchell down just outside the box. Tinkler was awarded a yellow card and had it not been for a terrific save from James Lowndes, the sides would have gone in even.

Half time; Deeping Rangers 1 Desborough Town 0

The second half started brightly with Steven Julian having a header cleared from under the Desborough crossbar by a defender. But despite this early promise, the rest of the game proved a little tedious. Rangers seemed content to knock long balls into Jones who had a constant battle throughout the afternoon with Desborough's Donavito. On the hour mark, Deeping's new signing. Brader almost scored on his debut, crashing a shot from just inside the penalty area against the crossbar.

The bright spot of the afternoon was the return of Adam Weston. He suffered a triple fracture to the cheek during a horrendous challenge during the FA Vase fixture, earlier in the season, at Ollerton Town. He did very well during this game, being substituted after seventy five minutes by Logan, another signing made by manager Tuncay Korkmaz. Rangers finally made the game safe with three minutes remaining, Mark Jones scoring again after good work by George Cox. It wasn't pretty, but in these kind of games the result is everything, and Rangers will be relieved to have picked up all three points on offer.
